The bluesy guy beat the belter diva for this year’s “American Idol” title Wednesday night, May 23, 2012.
Yes, the 21-year-old singer Phillip La Don Phillips, Jr or widely known as Phillip Phillips from San Diego topped 16-year-old Fil-Mexican Jessica Sanchez after a record-setting 132 million votes were cast. Phillips now became the fourth male in a row to win American Idol.
San Diego’s Jessica Sanchez, had been the fan favorite after Tuesday’s final sing-off, But Phillip’s individual song ‘Home’ won the audience.

As the new American Idol, Phillips wins a record contract with a Universal Music Group record label.
Phillip Phillips’ win followed an evening of star-studded performances by Rihanna, Aerosmith, Jennifer Holiday, last year’s winner Scotty McCreery and Fantasia singing alongside “Idol” contestants.

The season was the second year for judges Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler. It is not yet known if they will return to the show next year.
Now in its 11th year, the show has been a ratings juggernaut for FOX Network and the nation’s most-watched TV show for the last seven years.
